Observe, reflect and experiment. Not a lot has changed since Diderot’s time. Those simple rules have guided Main Street Project’s approach to experiential learning and continuous improvement from the beginning.
Research is at the heart of everything we do and the key to creating a process blueprint to guide the replication and expansion of our model. We’re working with local colleges, universities, government and non-government organizations to help gather and analyze the critical data that feeds back into our cycle of observation, reflection and experimentation. And now our Demonstration Farm provides a vital new locus for our research and development work.
- Our economic research looks at issues such as the overall profitability of the production model, and the economic ripple effect of our system design.
- On the ecological front, we seek to understand and document the biological, physical, and chemical processes on which energy transformation is dependent. By understanding the life cycles of nutrients through the air, soil, water, and through plants and animals, we can begin implementing regenerative practices to repair imbalances that are the legacy of conventional systems.
- Our social research looks at the well-being of farmers, farm and food system workers, and surrounding communities.
With several production unit prototypes developed (meat chickens, perennial crops, vegetables) and six years of rigorous field testing under our belt, we’re confident that our regenerative poultry model has the potential to scale up, deliver triple bottom line results and change how food produced around the world.
