Mirasol Cooperative – YPAC (Young Peoples Action Coalition)
In 2014, a group of young people in Northfield founded a local, worker owned business called Mirasol Cooperative. They are completely youth run and make their decisions on a consensus based model, which allows them to practice democracy in the workplace. Through this past year they have participated in training that included classroom and field training provided by Main Street Project. Using the knowledge they acquired along with the energy and drive of their group; Mirasol Cooperative (with Main Street support and mentorship) maneuvered through the challenges that face beginning farmers, successfully managing a sustainable farm.
- They grew field crops (onions, popcorn, and black beans).
- Managed a tree nursery (Hazelnuts and Elderberries).
- Assisted with research and development project for an egg-laying production unit for Main Street Project.
- Marketed and sold products to Just Food Co-op, Eco Gardens, Carleton and St. Olaf Colleges as well as individuals in the Northfield community.
